Effective Methods of Training and Development

Training and development is a never-ending process of enhancing competencies, clarifying concepts, and converting attitudes of the workers via structured and planned education which can help to improve the performance and productivity of the employees as well as the organization.

The process of training and development has a few steps as mentioned below and shown in figure 1.1 (MBA Skool, 2021).

1.     * Identify the requirement for training and development for individuals or teams

2.     *  Fix specific objectives and goals which need to be achieved

3.    * Select the methods of training

4.     * Conduct and implement the programs for employees

5.     * Evaluate the output and performance post the training and development sessions

6.     * Keep monitoring and evaluating the performances and again see if more training is required

Selecting the method plays a significant role in the success of the process of training and development. According to Kulkarni (2013), different practices are followed in the different industries and in the organizations too. The need for the training and development programme mainly depends upon the requirement of the job category. There are two methods of training such as on the job training and off the job training and they are shown below;

Figure 1.2: Methods of training (Kulkarni, 2013)

On the job training

On-the-job training is one of the best methods because it is planned, organized, and conducted at the employee’s worksite itself. It will generally be the primary method used for increasing employee skills and productivity. It is particularly appropriate for developing proficiency skills unique to an employee’s job – especially jobs that are relatively easy to learn and require locally-owned equipment and facilities.

Apprenticeship training

Apprenticeship training is a method that includes both actual work experience with classroom-related instruction. It will create an employee skilled in the occupation, who is capable of exercising independent decisions, and who contributes to the highest standards of professional conduct.

Coaching

This method uses senior experienced employees to train less experienced employees by working every single work to improve their skills and knowledge. Coaching is usually a very hands-on approach to skills development and is ideal for developing skills like Technical and Analytical skills.

Job rotation

Job rotation is a method that which workers transfer from one department to the other. From this method, employees can easily understand the overall business operation and help to develop cooperation among the departments. Further, it will help the organization to transfer, promote, and replace the employees very easily.

Refresher training

In this method, organizations arrange short-term courses and invite external experts to give basic updated knowledge to the employees to refresh their knowledge and skills to fit the changing environment.

Off the job training

Lectures/Seminars

A lecture is the method learners often most commonly associate with college and secondary education. In this method, the trainer does all of the lecture using handouts, visual aids, questions/answers, or posters to support the lecture.

Role playing

During a role-play, the trainees assume roles and act the situation. By doing this, employees can take some experience before doing their actual job.

Conclusion

Success the training and development depend on the selection of the appropriate method. Training methods should be selected after considering the proper study of pros and cons, cost-benefit analysis, and requirements of the job. If the training and development method is fitting to the requirement, the objectives of the employees and the organization can be fulfilled at the same time.
