Importance of training and development



The most important resource or asset in the organization is its people or human capital. According to Armstrong and Taylor (2014), the organization needs to have a human resource with a high and required level of knowledge, skills, and abilities to full fill the goals and objectives of the organization. Implementing an employee training program is an important part of making the most of the human capital, gaining a competitive advantage, and ensuring employee satisfaction. Not only the changes within the organization, external environment including political, economic, social, environmental, and legal changes very frequently. To face these challenges, employees should have proper training and development.

Training and development have many advantages and those can be mainly categorized into two parts, individual and organizational level benefits (Bashir and Jehanzeb, 2013). It shows in the following figure 1.1.

1.1. Individual benefits from training and development programme


Career competencies

Training and development program helps employees to improve their soft and technical skills to match the requirement of current jobs as well as potential jobs opportunities. This is the most important aspect when considering the individual level. After selecting and recruiting an employee to the end of his or her career, training and development help to perform the duties well and face challenges.

Employee satisfaction and motivation

Employee satisfaction and motivation are very important factors for the betterment of the individual and organization as well. One of the main advantages of employee training is that opportunities for learning and career growth increase employees’ job satisfaction. If the organization provides proper training and development programs, employees feel good about their organization because it cares about them, and employees can apply their new skills and take on new challenges at work, which improves their level of interest in their jobs. Further employees satisfy with their job and believe that their jobs have a purpose and are important to the organization.

Employee performance

Improvement in soft and technical skills through training has a positive impact on the performance of the individual since it helps them to do their job in an efficient and effective manner.

1.2. Organizational benefits from training and development programme


Market Growth

The present business environment is highly competitive and volatile. Training and development can help the organization to face competition and protect and improve the market share.

Organizational performance

Properly trained and developed employees are the most important resource of the organization. They only control all other resources. Because of training and development, all resources of the organization are utilized efficiently and effectively. This will help to have a good return on investment and improve the performance of the organization.

Employee retention

Satisfied and motivated employees through training and development is a long-term asset and because of this employee turnover will be reduced. Then loyal and competent employees retain within the organization and due to that recruitment costs will be reduced and not stuck the operation with new hiring.

Disadvantages of training and development

Few disadvantages of training and development are the high involvement of costs, a poor quality program led to poor performance, and require the time away from normal working time. Sometimes the organization spends a lot of money on inappropriate training programmes, therefore it is very much important to select a proper program, and have a cost-benefit analysis and evaluation.

Conclusion



Though training and development programmes have few drawbacks, there are plenty of benefits from this as discussed above. Training and development can be considered as an investment, not just a cost (Senna, 2016). Considering all, the organization should properly select, plan, analyze cost benefits and monitor the training and development programme for the betterment of the employees as well as the organization.
